New England HOME
January 27, 2013I came across an article in New England HOME (current issue) that showcased a house in nearby Southport, CT. It’s no wonder it caught my eye; the owner worked with Albert Hadley, and the Hadley influence runs throughout. Luckily for us, Albert Hadley lives on though the eyes of a few very talented decorators for true inspiration. Check out this is livable, unpretentious and fabulous home.

Really like this magazine. There are several fantastic articles this month worth a look. The website is www.nehomemag.com. Check it out!
Warm and Toasty
January 26, 2013This January weather is brutal, and we could all use a little warmth, underfoot and otherwise, so why not do it with this stunning Saxony Showroom (NYC) rug. It’s in mint condition with lush dyes and design still clearly vibrant. The hues are just the subtle touch for warming up a barren floor and room. Also, I really like the dimensions, which are 9′ by 12’15”, a generous but not overwhelming size, and the detail is lovely but crisp. One can easily make a statement in a modern or classic setting with this richness. Brighten your “Winter Blues” with earth tone lushness today!

A Beauty in English Oak
January 24, 2013Happy 2013 and cheers to some great new inventory to browse. Today’s offering is a lovely English Oak table, perfect for many settings, but ideal in a roomy foyer. I can see the fresh flowers and stack of chic books on it now. The dimensions are 48″ diameter and 20″ height. What’s nice about this piece is its versatility in style. Whether you have a bucolic country barn to furnish, a seaside cottage to fill or classic living/family room to decorate, this fits the bill nicely, aesthetically and financially.

DONE DEALS.
This new page will highlight deals we have done here in Darien. We thank you all so much for your support and continued enthusiasm. It has been, and continues to be, a fantastic experience for us.
LET’S HEAR IT FOR BEAUTIFUL REAL ESTATE!
Looking back at 2012
January 7, 2013It has been very quiet on the real estate radar the last few weeks. Our silence is a good indicator…. when we’ve got nothing to blog about, you know it is quiet out there! Inventory is very low right now and there is a certain level of demand which potentially sets the stage for a competitive market this Spring. (We have seen some fabulous previews and look forward to giving you an inside look as they come on).
There are a few properties from 2012 that we still really like.
24 Cliff Avenue. A favorite of ours. This 1911 charmer has more space than you think (approximately 2000) and is close to downtown Darien and trains, and walking distance to Rowayton. It has been on and off the market since April and they are asking $899,000. Listed by Betsy Nolan at Coldwell Banker. THIS PROPERTY IS IN CONTRACT.
106 Stephen Mather. Just reduced, this is a great location and an even better piece of flat property. Stephen Mather is such a pretty street that offers privacy yet not isolation! Lots of bedrooms and outdoor space for everyone! Listed by Holly Hurd at Kelly Associates. Asking $2,499,000.
593 Hollow Tree Ridge Road. If you came to our Sister Parish trunk show, then you know how fabulous this house really is! Dress it up or dress it down, this is one our favorites. If you haven’t already, check it out. A very special place indeed. Now asking $2,695,000. Listed by Hannah Burge at Kelly Associates.
86 Delafield Island. What a beauty. This 1920’s gem has been loved and lived in for many many years by the same family. The views are fabulous, and the setting makes you want to settle down…and never leave. Except on your boat from your dock! The patina oozes and oh’s what you could do to put your own stamp on this gem! Don’t be afraid of the work, this will be well worth it! Listed by Sheree Frank and Doug Milne at Kelly Associates. Asking $5,995,000.
February officially launches the Spring market, and we will start to see a lot of new inventory come on.

KESSA SCHAEFFER of Darien!
We loved how unique this display of antique ornaments looked in these vintage lights. The perfect way to keep them safe from little fingers or unstable trees. Kessa bought the lights in a store in New York called Olde Good Things on 24th Street. She intended to hang them in her home in Block Island, but her contractor told her they could not be wired. So she hauled them back home. She had a whole bunch of antique ornaments that she brought home from Brimfield (the blue, silver and purple ones) she decided to fill them with. The other one was filled with ornaments that her husband’s grandmother had when she passed away. She tells us that it is a wonderful reminder for her family of their grandmother and a unique and special way to preserve some old treasures. We know Miles Redd would agree!!!!
Thank you to everyone who submitted entries to our first annual Holiday Giveaway. It was so fun for us (but extremely hard to choose a winner) and we loved all the vignettes. Enjoy your new book Kessa…..it’s going to look great in that barn red farmhouse of yours!
Happy New Year!
December 31, 2012MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL AND TO ALL A GOODNIGHT
December 25, 2012The TOP PICK of Christmas is……
December 25, 2012Our final pick of Chrismas is our favorite house of all time! My good friend has a daughter that wants a dollhosue for Christams After searching for one she decided to make her own. What started out as a simple project turned into a labor of love. From the cedar shakes, to the shutters, clapboard and stone foundation, it was the most beautiful and important bulld of all time. It took hours, days and months of meticulous and painstaking planning, cutting, gluing etc. She put different paneling in the rooms, used an assortment of wallpaper and rugs (cut from remnants of fabric she had) and even used pieces to make into lamps or accessories.

Instant Gratification: Get It!
December 21, 2012Today is the last day of The Showcase with two more quality and appealing pieces to blog about. In the photo above, you will notice a Stark sisal rug as well as a Schumacher-covered swivel chair, a lovely shade of green with pink accents and piping. The rug is 12′ by 15′.8″ and is selling for $1,000; a nice size at a nice price. The chair has a mate, which is not pictured, and each is selling for $200, a great price. The dimensions are 31″ W, 32″ D, and 33″ H. To everyone who has followed The Showcase, you’ll also see the Lee Jofa love seat, which was featured yesterday, and the pair of Pembroke side tables featured Tuesday. We all love instant gratification even if we won’t admit it, and here’s an easy and economical way to do it. Go for the room on the 2006 YWCA Holiday Tour! It’s a festive classic, sure to make 2013 and future holidays, wonderful.

Flower Power
December 20, 2012Comfy, cozy, and classic is the best way to describe the feature of the day. Need a way to revitalize and brighten a tired room, then consider this perfectly-sized love seat, beautifully covered in Lee Jofa chintz. I’m crazy about the radiant flowers, and the braided trim finishes the bottom cleanly. The dimensions are 32″ height, 74″ length, and 39″ width. Doesn’t this make you want to curl-up on it with a good book and cup of tea, especially on a dreary day, surrounding yourself with flower power? Rejuvenate! Check in tomorrow, and you can see this piece again, set in a gracious living room along with the Stark sisal rug and Schumacher-covered swivel chairs I’ll be blogging about. Stay tuned!

French Charming
December 19, 2012Day Three of The Showcase and another lovely antique to ponder. We move from the English to the French with this charming occasional table, comprised of buhl Walnut, Rosewood, and brass. “Buhl” or “Boulle” is a type of inlay and marquetry method perfected by Andre Charles Boulle, the official cabinet maker to Louis XIV. The dark spot you see on the bottom shelf is the delicate pattern. This is truly a special piece and would be perfect for a bare corner, just waiting for some warmth and sophistication.

To Pembroke We Go!
December 18, 2012I have always loved Pembroke tables, named after the Countess of Pembroke (1737-1831), who was the first to order such a piece. The two presented on The Showcase today are handsome examples of these timeless essentials. When opened, the hinged leaves become oval to a span of 36″ wide and 28″ long. Crossbanding on the top and drawers as well as fillet boxwood inlays on the legs are classic features of the functional and elegant pair. Brass shoes and casters complete the tables with stability and beauty. The condition of both are good and the dimensions are 27.5″ height, 28″ depth, and 20″ length. Since the pieces can be used together or independently, they’re a wise and aesthetic investment in antique collecting and interior design.
Price: $1,800 for the pair

A Feathered Treasure
December 17, 2012The first striking piece in The Showcase is a show stopper, and if you saw the opening blog yesterday, you got an early shot of it. This antique, crotch mahogany linen press is stately and graceful with matched veneers, dove-tailed drawers, and ratcheted shelf rests. For those wishing to use it as an entertainment center, the top shelf has been nicely adapted for TV storage and more. Not only is the cabinet very clean-finished, but in very good condition. The dimensions are 6’10” height, 26.5″ depth, and 42″ length. Modestly priced at $2,500 this exceptional antique should be on everyone’s wish list. Whether you are looking for a singular stunner in a living room, family room, bedroom or hallway, this is the one to seriously consider.
